Malanders

This is seen as a primarily "wet" reddish wound located in the fold at the front of the leg created by the Long Pastern Bone joint. It appears to resemble a small graze. When it presents as a small cut or ezcematous wound, one should smear a fat rich cream on it for protection.

For this application I have come across just the right ingredients:

Take:
~ approx. 2 - 3 gramms Salicylic acid (cheap, easily availible ingredient).
~ approx. 100 gramms Vaseline or Milk Fat.

Mix in a small clean bowl.

The Salicylic acid is organic and not harmful to the animal, and has been used as a preservative in jam (when gelantine was too expensive).
Acetyl Salycilate is the active ingredient in Aspirin. This cream is, by the way, very fungicidal, and can be used to treat all sorts of fungicidal conditions. When the cut has healed, one must continue bathing the wound persistently on a daily basis with salty water. After a couple of days the scab will fall off the wound.
It is self explanitary that during this period it is vital that every effort is made to keep the horse clean and dry, on a paddock or in a stable.
