The Hoof Roll Inflammation

or Podotrochlose…

The diagnosis of this hoof desease is difficult, and is charakterised by a creeping progressive inflammation of the mucous membranes of the Hoof-roll. This condition characteristically involves the fore legs, and repetitively attacks the smooth cartilage coating the Navicular Bone (a small roller shaped bone between the Short Pastern Bone and Pedal Bone)Der Huf - Querschnitt, Hufrolle Detail

Griffelbeine - Splint bone (4th metacarpal)
Mittelfussknochen (Röhrbein) - Cannon bone (3rd metacarpal)
Gleichbeine - Sesamoid bones (Proximal sesamoids)
Fesselbein - Long pastern (Proximal phalanx)
Kronbein - short pastern(Middlephalanx)
Hufbein - pedal bone (Distal phalanx)

This smooth layer of cartilage acts as the slide for the Digital Flexor Tendon. If this layer repeatedly swells it can disturb the inter-dependant relationship of the bones in this region, destroying the normal hoof dynamics, with the end result beeing likely tearing of the tendon. One can easily visualise this if one repeatetively drags a rope back and forth over a sharp edge. This tearing naturally leads to more infammation in this area, and so forth.

To rule out possible differential diagnoses (bones, joints, tendons), one can use the following Wedge Probing technique (used by Vets and Farriers). To do this the hoof is placed on a wedge-shaped piece of wood, with the thicker end of the wedge placed in the direction of the toe, and the other front hoof is lifted to put pressure on the suspect hoof. The over-stretching of the tendons are so uncomfortable for the lame horse, that this little exercise is bound to raise a little objection. However, a horse not suffering from this ailment will not find this overly uncomfortable. If the horse displays this negative reaction, one should be left in no doubt as to the importance of calling a Vet. The urgency of prompt treatment of this condition is compounded by the fact that treatment is only successful if caught in it`s early stages.

The only way to alleviate the symptoms is to suspend the horse in traction in order to remove weight-bearing on the affected hoof. In very early stages of this condition, one can possibly obtain an improvement of these symptoms, by the extensive leading of the unladen horse on a soft paddock.
